Pence Protects "Old Glory"

Mike Pence lead the House in the Pledge of Allegiance this week as he supported a bill that amends the US Constitution to prevent the American Flag from being desecrated. Mike Pence urged other House members to pass the bill by saying,

"Mr. Speaker, I want to begin by commending Mr. Cunningham and Chairman Sensenbrenner for their hard work on this important amendment.

“On February 23, 1945, after surviving the bloodiest battle since Gettysburg, a platoon of Marines trudged up Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima with a simple task: to raise the American flag above the devastation below. When the flag was raised by Sergeant Mike Strank and his platoon, history records that a thunderous cheer arose from our troops on land and on sea, in foxholes and on stretchers.

“It is written, ‘Without a vision, the people perish.’ On that day, when the American flag began flapping in the wind high above Iwo Jima, the troops were provided with a vision that inspired and rallied them to victory in the Pacific. Mr. Speaker, the flag is still the vision for all Americans who cherish those who stood ready to make the necessary sacrifices for freedom.

“By adopting the Flag Protection Amendment, we will raise Old Glory yet again. We will raise her above the decisions of a judiciary that was wrong on our law, history and values. We will raise her above the cynicism of our times. We will say to my generation of Americans those unwelcome words, ‘There are limits.’ Out of respect for those who served beneath it and those who died within its sight, we must say that there are boundaries necessary to the survival of freedom and democracy.

“C.S. Lewis said, ‘We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.’ Mr. Speaker, let us this day cease to laugh at honor. Let us elevate out of dishonor our unique national symbol to its rightful sacred place. Let us pass this amendment to restore to Old Glory the modest protections of the law she represents. For the sake of all who venerate her, it is time to raise the American flag to her old glory again.”

Pence Passes UN Reform Bill

The House passed the UN reform bill 221-184 with Pence's amendment passing 281-126. These are Pence's comments on the UN reform.

As the original co-sponsor of the Henry J. Hyde U.N. Reform Act. Today I rise with a profound sense of gratitude about the leadership that my mentor and friend, Henry J. Hyde of Illinois has provided on this bill and throughout an illustrious career in this Congress.

“I also want to commend the gentleman from California, Mr. Lantos, for his thoughtful consideration of this bill.

“One of the extraordinary things about this debate as it unfolds before the American people is the degree of agreement between the two men I just mentioned. It is a rare piece of legislation indeed where there is so much agreement about the goals.

“But I believe what will become apparent to any observer of this debate is that we are not so much arguing over the ends as the means. And that is a legitimate argument that will be a great service to the country.

“The United Nations is desperately in need of fundamental reform and the Henry J. Hyde U.N. Reform Act does just that.

“In 1994, staffers at UNICEF’s Kenya office defrauded and squandered up to $10 million by some estimates.

“In the Congo last year, U.N. peacekeepers and civilian personnel stand accused of widespread sexual exploitation.

“And we all know of the $10 billion oil-for-food scandal.

“Both sides agree that it’s time for reform in the wake of years of mismanagement and outright scandal. But I submit, humbly, that it’s time for U.N. reform with teeth and that’s precisely what the Hyde U.N. Reform Act provides.

“It focuses on budget streamlining, prioritization of programs, oversight accountability, peacekeeping, and human rights, but the Hyde bill also uses the leverage of withholding up to 50 percent of U.S. assessed dues if certifications are not made in key areas.

“Under the Hyde bill the U.N. must achieve 32 of 39 reforms, 14 of which are mandatory, or face the potential loss of 50 percent of U.S. assessed dues.

“And let’s be clear: the point of contention is who controls the power of the purse. And I submit that the power of the purse is the power of the American people. It is not for the State Department or even the Secretary of State to say when and how the resources of the American people will be spent.

“That is the function of the Congress of the United States, even where the United Nations is concerned.

“It’s time to save the U.N. from its own scandals and mismanagement. It’s time for U.N. Reform with teeth.”

Pence Protects Children by Fighting Online Pornography

After introducing and passing The Truth in Domain Names Act, which makes it illegal for porn industries to deceive children and the public by using false identies such as www.whitehouse.com, Mike Pence continues to fight online pornography by trying to segregate dot-porn sites. An idea that has come up is that these industries would change their domain to .xxx instead of .com. This way children could discern between names that were alright to click on and those that were not. Pence continues to protect the American youth and prayerfully people will come along side him and support this bill.
